Trying to Rein God In

In the first reading (Acts 2:1-11), we hear the account of the descent of the Holy Spirit. Tongues are given physically – tongues of flame descending on them – and metaphorically – the gift of tongue, or ability to speak other languages. This is the reverse of the Tower of Babel. In building the tower, man tried to reach God under his own power. He tried to use technology to control God, to bring Him to us.

When we try to conform nature to our desires, we ultimately fail. We succeed when we reverse this and seek to conform ourselves to how things really are.

How often today we try the same trick of those tower-builders. We try to use technology to be gods, to control even life and death. We try to rein God in, forgetting that He is not a tame lion. He cannot be reined; instead, He reigns.
